We address homelessness by equipping people transitioning to permanent housing with the tools for social mobility — because education isn't just a resource, it's a pathway to stability, independence, and opportunity.
Rooted Futures started in the spring of our sophomore year at Brentwood School — two friends who wanted to do something concrete about the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles.
Through our partnership with the Union Rescue Mission — one of the largest and longest-serving rescue missions in the country — we tutor unhoused adults preparing for their GEDs at Angeles House in Compton, and unhoused children building foundational literacy and math skills at the Sylmar Center. We're expanding to serve veterans next.
We're a small team on purpose. Every tutor knows every student. We show up every Saturday because consistency is what education requires — and it's exactly what people in transition need.

We meet each learner where they are — no scripts, no standardized curriculum, no fees.

We operate at two Union Rescue Mission locations in Los Angeles County — with a third expansion opening soon at the Veterans Association.
Every Saturday, our team travels to Compton's Angeles House to work with unhoused men preparing for their GEDs. We tutor across every subject on the exam — math, science, social studies, and reasoning through language arts — meeting each student wherever they're starting from.
At the Sylmar Center, we work one-on-one with unhoused children on reading comprehension and math. Our tutors sit alongside each kid every Saturday, building foundational skills through consistent, patient instruction.
We're expanding to serve unhoused veterans through a new Union Rescue Mission partnership at the Veterans Association. Same model — Saturday tutoring, GED prep, literacy support — for those who've served the country and now need a hand.

Rooted Futures wouldn't exist without the Union Rescue Mission. URM has served Los Angeles' Skid Row and beyond for over 130 years — providing shelter, meals, addiction recovery, education, and dignity to unhoused men, women, and children.
